If you don’t have Netflix (why not?), please follow the links in the titles to find each film for purchase on Amazon. Enjoy!

October 1stShivers (Netflix Streaming)

shivers

That’s right, starting October first David Cronenberg’s first feature film Shivers will be available on Netflix. A film that repulsed and terrified critics and audiences way back in 1975, Cronenberg even claims he got kicked out of his apartment at the time due to a “morality clause”.
Synopsis : The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.

October 2ndCarrie 2013 (Netflix Streaming)

kinopoisk.ru

An unnecessary but surprisingly watchable remake. I actually enjoyed this one.
Synopsis : A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

October 2nd — ABCs Of Death 2 (On Demand with a limited theatrical release to follow on October 31st!)

ABCs-2-Poster

This follow-up to 2012’s first outing has an impressive line-up of directors and the goodwill of the horror community after offering up a letter to an unknown director in a great contest last year. I don’t expect it to all blow my mind, but I am hopeful that at least a few of the segments will be great!
Synopsis : Be ready to learn your ABC’s again with 26 new directors and 26 new deaths bring your kids to a blood and gore filled horror so good your face will be blood red.

October 3rd — Exists (On Demand)

20140827-exists

A found footage Bigfoot film from Eduardo Sanchez. It will have to work hard to top Willow Creek, in my opinion.
Synopsis : For five friends, it was a chance for a summer getaway— a weekend of camping in the Texas Big Thicket. But visions of a carefree vacation are shattered with an accident on a dark and desolate country road. In the wake of the accident, a bloodcurdling force of nature is unleashed—something not exactly human, but not completely animal— an urban legend come to terrifying life…and seeking murderous revenge.

October 3rd — Inner Demons (On Demand)

Inner-Demons-Poster

It looks kind of crazy. From IFC Midnight.
Synopsis :   Follows an ‘Intervention’-style reality show crew that films an episode about a sixteen-year old girl, a former A-student, who is fighting addiction but may in fact be suffering from something even more destructive: demonic possession. The movie is an inquiry into the truth about her – with symptoms that straddle the disturbing and scary intersection between insanity, addiction and true possession.

October 10thDead Snow 2: Red vs Dead (On Demand with a limited theatrical release.)

DeadSnow2-poster

Really looking forward to this one. It looks like a great sequel to a fun flick!
Synopsis : Picking up immediately where the original left off, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to the gore-filled action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in its wake. Director Tommy Wirkola returns to the helm with a vengeance, coming up with more inventive ways to maim and dismember than you ever thought possible. Combining wry humor with horrific worst-case scenarios, this follow-up to the 2009 Midnight classic is sure to shock the weak-of-heart and delight even the most hard-core fans of the horror genre. Colonel Herzog is back, and he is not to be fucked with.

October 10th — The Canal (On Demand and limited theatrical release)

the canal

Synopsis : Set in rural Ireland, THE CANAL stars Rupert Evans (Hellboy) as David, a film archivist with a morbid fascination for old films in which the subjects have since died. Right after learning that his wife (Hannah Hoekstra) may be cheating on him, she mysteriously disappears at the same time that his assistant Claire (Antonia Campbell Hughes) finds an old reel of film that points to a murder that took place in his house a hundred years ago. David starts to suspect her disappearance may involve some form of the supernatural but he also quickly becomes the prime suspect.

October 10th — The Houses October Built (On Demand with a limited theatrical release)

The-Houses-October-Built

Pretty creepy looking, and a unique premise. I’m in.
Synopsis : Looking to find an authentic, blood-curdling good fright for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down these underground Haunts. Just when their search seems to reach a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the Haunt has come to them…

October 14thWitching & Bitching (DVD and Netflix Streaming)

witching-and-bitching-2013

I watched this one On Demand a few months back and it is pretty awesome. A very strange and fun flick! Recommended.

housebound__140506181557

This is a very cool looking horror comedy from New Zealand. Can’t wait to check this one out!
Synopsis :   Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she begins to wonder whether she’s inherited her overactive imagination, or if the house is in fact possessed by a hostile spirit who’s not particularly thrilled about her return.

October 16th — The Town That Dreaded Sundown (On Demand)

news_photo_57406_1410888847_630

A new “meta” take on the classic that inspired many that followed it. At least it is an interesting way to tackle a remake. Consider me curious about this one.
Synopsis : 65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called ‘moonlight murders’ begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him.

October 16th — Wolves (On Demand)

wolves-poster

So, writer and director (and former voice of Solid Snake!) David Hayter says this film is like “Twilight with a bit more bite to it, and without abstinence.” Might have to skip this one…
Synopsis : Cayden Richards, 18, has it all: Captain of the high school football team straight-A student gorgeous girlfriend. But when he wakes one dark night to find his parents brutally murdered, he is horrified to realize that he is turning into an animal: a wild, savage wolf.

The opposing clans are lead by Connor, the powerful, pure-blood alpha of a savage pack and John Tollerman, an old farmer, committed to protecting the human citizens of Lupine Ridge.
But when Cayden falls for Angelina, the beautiful, young mate promised to Connor, a battle to the death is inevitable. And as the past begins to reveal itself, Cayden’s place in the world becomes clearer — As does his power to put an end to the savage violence building up around, and within him…

I have to be honest. I never even saw the first one. But I will watch any thing that the Soska Sisters put their name on. I hope it is crazy.

October 21stWrong Turn 6: Last Resort (DVD)

wrong-turn-6-last-resort-dvd-cover-54

Wow, there are six of these fucking things now? Geez. I liked the first one, and the second because of Henry Rollins in Rambo mode, but….
Synopsis : A sudden and mysterious inheritance brings Danny (Anthony Ilott) and his friends to Hobb Springs, a forgotten resort deep in the West Virginia hills. Hobb Springs is being looked after under the watchful care of Jackson and Sally, a socially awkward couple who introduce Danny to the long lost family he’s never known. A clan by the name of Hillicker. But soon Danny learns his relatives have a different way of living, that for generations, the Hillickers have observed ancient traditions rooted in cannibalism and other taboo rituals. These practices have kept the family strong if not necessarily pure. And tempted by the forbidden, Danny is forced to choose between his friends and his bloodline.

October 23rd — V/H/S : Viral (On Demand)

VHSVIRAL_POSTER_WEB-1-691x1024

I really enjoyed parts of the first two, and can’t wait to see what they come up with for this one. I hope that there is at least one segment that is as insane ans the cult sequence from part 2.
Synopsis : V/H/S: VIRAL’s segments include the story of a deranged illusionist who obtains a magical object of great power, a homemade machine that opens a door to a parallel world, teenage skaters that unwillingly become targets of a Mexican death cult ritual, and a sinister, shadowy organization that is tracking a serial killer. The segments are tied together by the story of a group of fame-obsessed teens following a violent car chase in LA that unwittingly become stars of the next internet sensation.

October 24thStonehearst Asylum (On Demand with a limited theatrical release)

stonehearst-asylum-poster

A high profile Edgar Allan Poe adaptation with some big stars and an excellent director. Count me in for this one.

October 28thNightbreed: The Director’s Cut

0

Finally, the long-awaited director’s cut of Clive Barker’s unique vision of monsters and rednecks will be available for watching in your very own home. I saw the “Cabal Cut” of this last year (and transcribed Mr. Barker’s Q&A here) and this version is the definitive version of Nightbreed at last, according to all parties involved in it’s creation and restoration. There are two separate versions available.
Synopsis : A troubled young man is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of monsters are hiding from humanity.

So there we have it, freaks and geeks!
Tons of choices for your home entertainment viewing for this coming month. There are some great choices to be had, for sure.
